European Cities Marketing is a professional association that performs in key areas, forming the “architecture” of ECM.

EVENTS1. Valuable platforms and forums

ECM provides for its members a variety of valuable platforms with topics and subjects matched to our understanding and improvement of European Competitiveness. These are…

– Conferences: Typically 2 conferences a year hosted in a member city. The June conference is combined with the General Assembly.

– Knowledge Groups: Knowledge groups form a critical part of ECM and are one of the key success factors for the association. Knowledge groups play a critical role currently in developing our potential in the areas of: City Marketing, TIC, Research and Statistics, Digital Destinations, City Cards and Benchmarking Report.

Knowledge groups play a key role in improving our competitiveness. They provide the insight to help understand our barriers and the innovation and fresh new thinking to get break-through solutions. They are either “closed” when they are task orientated or “open” when they report back to members.

2. Insight/research/analysis/benchmarking studies

Insight, research, analysis and benchmarking form a critical part of the capability and the potential of the association. By providing data, cities can benchmark themselves in terms of their performance in the meetings industry, their finance and sponsorship structures and their bednights and spend amongst other things. For the 50% of our members who do not have their own research departments, ECM can provide a unique and essential source of information and it will prioritize this activity within budget constraints.

3. Knowledge exchange and best practice
Knowledge exchange and best practice is fluid within ECM and driven from various parts of the association. Communication of results to members are made on ECM Intranet as a supplement to knowledge group open forums during conferences.


4. Developing people, careers and future leaders
ECM has played a key role in developing people, careers and future leaders for the past 3 decades through its Summer School run by a member-driven faculty.
ECM Summer School is granted accreditation as part of the CMP – Certified Meetings Professional – Certificate, a worldwide certificate within the Meetings Industry which is an absolute USP for a successful career.

ECM builds on this successful legacy with the TIC (Tourist Information Centre) Expert meeting. This special event provides the participants with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and also to share information on Tourist Information Centres with other destinations.


5. City advocacy and representation
The case for urban tourism needs to be made. ECM works with its members to actively support the Politicians Forum at IMEX and assists members at the city level with key-note speeches and press conferences targeted at local politicians, local industry and local members and relevant associations to drive home the message that urban tourism is critical not only to the success of cities themselves but nations and regions. City tourism generates taxes, provides employment and benefits a wide range of related support industries. Attracting major congresses to the city links industries and cities together and changes the make-up of the city itself.
