Barcelona, the second largest city of Spain and the capital of the Catalonia region, is often referred to as the business centre of Spain. It is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and enjoys a mild climate throughout the year. Founded by the Carthaginians more than 2,000 years ago, it keeps a rich historical heritage and deeply rooted cultural traditions. With the Olympic Games in 1992, Barcelona underwent a dramatic renovation of its public and private infrastructures, becoming one of the most modern cities in Europe, and an attractive destination both for business and leisure tourism. In 2004, with the Universal Forum of Cultures, a 5 month event supported by UNESCO, Barcelona completes the full renovation of its waterfront, opens a new International Convention Centre and commits itself with sustainability, cultural diversity and peace.
