Bratislava
Description

Bratislava (aka Pressburg, Pozsony), capital of Slovak Republic, lies on the banks of the Danube river and at the foot of the Little Carpathians, only 60km distant from Vienna. It is the least known city out of 3 capitals of former Austria-Hungarian Monarchy: Vienna, Budapest and Pressburg. Pressburg used to be a cosmopolitan town in the past and you can still feel this cosmopolitan and friendly spirit also these days. You can find here the beautiful baroque old town freshly renovated houses of pastel colours – picturesque barocque palaces, fountains, gothic churches, romantic narrow streets and one of the loveliest old squares in Europe. Inspite of these facts, this city still remains undiscovered. Even in the high tourist season it is not overcrowded by tourists, like it is in other big cities in central Europe.
The Pressburg gastronomy comes out of traditions of monarchy with some slovak specialities. The delicious wine, that has been growing on the hills around Bratislava was served to the kings table for centuries. Nowadays it belongs to the best in Europe.
The cultural life is traditionally varied: 12 theatre houses, several concert halls, 22 cinemas, 20 cultural centres, 11 museums and 23 galleries.
"...(Bratislava) is often overlooked. But it is well worth a visit. For a start, it boasts a rich Habsburg heritage and a compact old town with baroque palaces and Gothic treasures. It has a leisurely pace, welcoming cafes and good local wines. It's cheap. And it's almost certainly somewhere your neighbours won't have visited," says the Daily Telegraph.
