Description

Hungary - Where meetings meet traditions

Budapest, a city with two million inhabitants in the heart of Europe, located halfway between London and Moscow is the capital of a country that differs greatly from all of its neighbours both in its language and culture.

Budapest, the "Pearl of the Danube", whose wonderful panorama is on UNESCO's World Heritage list, was born from the merge of the former political centre Buda and the economic-industrial centre Pest. It is famous for its cultural heritage, its entertaining festivals, its spicy culinary culture and traditional customs. The city is also well known for its amazing built heritage: a lot of the late 19th, early 20th century buildings - that provided a fertile environment for the development of the 'coffee house literature' in the late 19th century - are now transformed into world class hotels. These complement the growing conference facilities of the capital, and offer a unique atmosphere for these events.

Hungary, a spicy “gulyás” of east and west, a country situated on the Eastern border of the ancient Roman empire and the Western border of the mediaeval Turkish empire thus has been occupied by different nations for 2000 years; where Central Europe’s largest lake, Lake Balaton is located; where hundreds of therapeutic mineral springs gush up from the depths helping many thousands to recover their health; where the 2000-year-old Roman ruins, 400-year-old Turkish monuments get on well with the rich Hungarian folk traditions, is now an interesting European destination for tourists with all different kinds of motivation.

Wine and gastronomy are trademarks of Hungary just as much as the Parliament, the famous museums and the healing spas. Hungarian viticulture has a centuries-old past, while Hungarian gastronomy has a special character, in which distinctive elements brought from the east blend with the delicate elegance of French and Italian cuisine. Paprika powder, onions from Makó, the world’s most flavoursome green paprikas, goose liver, pálinka and the more than one thousand types of wine from 22 wine regions are truly Hungarian. Hungarian wines and cuisine are marked by international and prize-winning chefs at the culinary Oscars.

Hungarian State Opera

Budapest is proud of possessing one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. The opening performance of the Opera House was held in the neo-Renaissance building, the jewel of the avenue, in 1884 after nine years of construction. The staircase and the auditorium of the palace, designed by one of the best architects of those days: Miklós Ybl, are decorated with frescos of eminent Hungarian painters such as Bertalan Székely, Mór Thán and Károly Lotz. The first director was Ferenc Erkel, then Gustav Mahler held this post for several years, and Puccini directed the premiere of two of his operas here. Renowned guest conductors include Otto Klemperer, Sergio Failoni and Lamberto Gardelli. It is still one of the best opera houses in Europe. Well worth a visit, even for those who do not especially like operas.

Hungarian Academy of Science

The building of the Academy, inaugurated in 1865, was built at a turning point in the urban and architectural history of Budapest as one of the first yet most mature and valuable historicising examples of the neo-Renaissance style. This architectural trend, which virtually dominated the construction boom in Budapest that started in the 1870s, had been an alien, controversial new tendency in Hungary only a decade before. While west and east of us, in Paris and St. Petersburg, classicism developed evenly in the direction of the neo-Renaissance and, later, at the end of the century, the neo-Baroque style, in Hungary the events of 1848 caused a break in urban development and construction, as a result of which the new style could not emerge as part of an internal organic development. This explains the heated arguments that surrounded the building of the palace.
