Gijón
Description

Gijón, set in the heart of the region of Asturias, is a city that has been open to the sea and to Europe for more than 2000 years.
With a surface area of 181.7 km2, the municipality of Gijón is located in the centre of the coast of Asturias. Despite the fact that it is the most populous city in Asturias, with just over 270,000 inhabitants, it has still known how to maintain its human dimension and quality of life. 90% of the city’s inhabitants live in the city centre and the rest are distributed amongst the 25 rural parishes.
The renovated urban spaces blend naturally and harmoniously with the sea front and natural rural environment, osmotically integrating such singular spaces as the Atlantic Botanical Gardens, just 7 minutes’ away from the city centre; this extensive area includes nature reserves protected by the regulations of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.
The improved road communications allow quick assess from Gijón to the natural, cultural and financial resources of the rest of the region, bringing the city closer to Europe via the Cantabrian Coast and the Basque Country and, thanks to the motorway and dual carriage network, Madrid, the capital of Spain, is less than 5 hours away.
The opening of new airlines has reduced travelling times still further. Paris, London and Brussels are, among others some of the European cities that can now be reached in flights of just over an hour and a half from Asturias. All this without forgetting the daily shuttle services linking Gijón with the most important cities in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville).
