Lausanne Montreux Congress (LMC) – the joint business tourism promotion structure of Lausanne Tourisme and Montreux-Vevey Tourisme supported by Vaud Promotion – unveils “LMCare 2025”, a global strategy aimed at improving the region’s performance in terms of sustainable tourism. LMC wants to make the Lake Geneva region known as a unifying and exemplary destination in terms of sustainability and aims to become one of the top 10 most sustainable business destinations in the world.
The destinations of Lausanne and Montreux Riviera have long been sensitive to sustainability issues. By rising from 19th to 14th place in the 2019 Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS), LMC has demonstrated its commitment to continuous improvement in this area. The GDS Index is the leading sustainability benchmarking and improvement programme for cities around the world, with over 70 destinations compared. It is used both to assess a destination’s performance and to enable it to improve its performance. It is also a tool for potential clients to assess the sustainability of cities to visit or work with.
With the launch of its “LMCare 2025” strategy, LMC now wants to strengthen its performance to develop a responsible destination that brings value to its people, the environment and local business, in order to reach the top 10 most sustainable business destinations in the world. In order to achieve this and to unite all the players in the industry, a strong emphasis has been placed on raising awareness among partners. As part of this strategy, extensive stakeholder consultation activities were undertaken, starting first with background research on the destination and local region, followed by cross sector surveys to identified significant stakeholder groups such as clients, suppliers and employees. These results of these activities and the results of the GDS-Index benchmark in 2019 were combined with a series of taskforce meetings, whose members comprised 28 representatives from the following areas: hotels; universities; restaurants and catering; local authorities; event agencies; tourist sites; public transport; tourist offices; companies linked to the sector; conference centres; and labelling bodies.
“LMCare 2025” is structured around four major axes: governance and partnership management; transition to a virtuous and regenerative economy; environmental protection and social cohesion; and communication of actions undertaken. This strategy also fits perfectly with the objectives and timetables of the cities of Lausanne and Montreux, the canton of Vaud, the Confederation and Switzerland Tourism in terms of sustainability.
